Last Friday, amidst the chaos of our weekly ‘to do’ lists, my partner and I honoured our monthly tradition of a ‘date night’. As we cheered each other on playing shuffleboard and pool, it struck me how crucial these moments are for our relationship, especially with the whirlwind of responsibilities that come with raising children. This got me thinking about how important it is to make time for each other, even with all of life’s stresses & demands.

Why Date Nights Are a Must:

Life has a funny way of pulling us in a million different directions. Between work deadlines, school pickups, and household chores, finding time for each other can feel like a distant dream. Yet, amidst the chaos, carving out space for regular date nights isn't just a luxury – it's an essential investment in our well being and the health of our relationships.

These date nights offer more than just a temporary escape from the daily grind. They serve as vital checkpoints where you can pause, breathe, and reconnect on a deeper level. In the quiet moments shared over dinner or during a leisurely stroll, you are able to rediscover each other's personalities and rekindle the sparks that initially drew you together. Amongst the hustle and bustle of our busy lives, these nights may provide a gentle reminder of why you fell in love in the first place – they offer a chance to celebrate the unique bond you share and reaffirm your commitment to each other.

Studies actually back this up. It turns out; couples that make time for regular date nights are happier and more satisfied in their relationships. Plus, in the midst of life’s stress, having these nights to look forward to can be a real mood-booster.

Making Date Nights Work:

While the benefits of date nights are undeniable, making them a reality can be a logistical challenge. Balancing work schedules, childcare responsibilities, and household chores often leaves little room for romance. However, with careful planning and commitment, it's possible to overcome these obstacles.

Our tips for planning a successful date night include:

  • Pick your frequency: Agree a schedule for date nights that fits both of your lifestyles. Consider things such as: Are you aiming for once a week or once a month? Which days work best for each partner? Would a date ‘day’ work better than night?

  • Plan in Advance: Set a date ahead of time to allow for proper planning and anticipation. It may be useful to sit down together at the start of each month to agree which day works for both of you. Ensure you both block this out of your calendar, as cancelling on date night is very unromantic!

  • Arrange Childcare: Secure a reliable babysitter, talk to a family member or plan for a sleepover with friends well in advance to avoid last minute panicking about who is taking care of the kids.

  • Choose Fun Activities: think outside the box and prioritise communication and compromise when it comes to selecting activities that both of you will enjoy.

Date Night Ideas:

  • Game Night Extravaganza: Bust out the board games, whip up some snacks, and let the friendly competition begin.

  • DIY Wine Tasting: Grab a few bottles of wine, blindfold each other, and see who can guess the flavours.

  • Dance Class: Sign up for a dance class and learn some new moves while you laugh at each other's attempts.

  • Live Music: Take a look online at local music venues to get an idea of artists who are performing – often you can get cheap tickets to small, up and coming performers.

  • Escape Room: work as a team to solve puzzles and uncover clues whilst racing against the clock to escape – this will test your communication skills and strengthen your bond as you work together to conquer challenges.

  • DIY Paint Night: Unleash your inner artists with a DIY paint night at home, complete with canvases, brushes, and plenty of creativity.

  • Karaoke Night: Let loose and belt out your favourite tunes together at a local karaoke bar for a lively and entertaining date night.

Whatever you decide to do on date night, remember not to put too much pressure on the event or the night itself. What truly matters is spending quality time together and enjoying each other's company in a relaxed & positive environment.
